VisionRT in Portugal — Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT)

Interphysix is the authorised distributor of VisionRT in Portugal, providing world-leading SGRT (Surface Guided Radiation Therapy) solutions for radiation therapy centres. All VisionRT systems are registered with Infarmed as medical devices.

What is SGRT (Surface Guided Radiation Therapy)?

Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) is a real-time patient positioning and monitoring modality that uses 3D structured-light cameras to capture body surface topography with sub-millimetre accuracy. Unlike X-ray-based systems or tattoo marks, SGRT is completely non-ionising and non-invasive.

During each radiation therapy fraction, the system continuously compares the current patient surface with the reference surface from the planning CT, computing translational and rotational deviations in real time. Key clinical benefits include:

    • Tattoo elimination — No permanent skin marks required
    • Continuous intra-fraction monitoring — Automatic tracking throughout irradiation
    • Respiratory gating — Breath-hold synchronisation (DIBH for breast)
    • CTV-to-PTV margin reduction — Higher geometric precision, lower dose to organs at risk
    • Frameless radiosurgery — SRS and SBRT with open-face mask

AlignRT — real-time tracking without tattoo marks

AlignRT is the most widely used SGRT system in the world, with over 2,500 installations across leading hospitals. The platform uses three stereoscopic structured-light cameras mounted on the treatment room ceiling, continuously reconstructing the patient 3D surface at 25 Hz. AlignRT Plus is registered with Infarmed under CDM no. 93816049.

Available modules include: Auto ROI, Beam Guide, OIS Reports, MapRT, Postural Video, Real Time Coach, SRS, Respiratory Module, DoseRT and Horizon.

SafeRT and SafeRT-ID — positioning control and patient identification

SafeRT (Infarmed CDM no. 93816065) is an independent positioning control system that detects and alerts to deviations beyond defined tolerances before irradiation. SafeRT-ID (Infarmed CDM no. 24308676) adds biometric patient identification through 3D facial recognition, eliminating the risk of patient mix-up — one of the most critical errors in radiation therapy.

    Implementations in Portugal

SGRT adoption in Portugal has grown significantly. IPO Porto (Portuguese Institute of Oncology) is among the pioneer institutions, using AlignRT for breast treatments with DIBH and SRS/SBRT procedures. Several Portuguese public hospitals are implementing SGRT as part of their radiation therapy service modernisation.
