Radiation Dosimeters for Hospitals and Clinics in Portugal
Radiation monitoring is both a legal obligation and a technical necessity in any hospital or clinic performing diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy or other procedures involving ionising radiation sources. Radiation dosimeters measure — in real time or cumulatively — the dose received by occupationally exposed workers and the dose rates in working areas, ensuring compliance with Portuguese legislation and international radiation protection standards.
Interphysix is the authorised distributor of Thermo Fisher Scientific in Portugal and Spain, supplying the full range of RadEye radiation dosimeters and monitors to hospitals, private clinics, medical physics departments and radiation protection services.
Types of Radiation Dosimeters — Personal, Area and Contamination
Choosing the right instrument depends on the type of radiation, the clinical application and regulatory requirements. There are three main categories of dosimeters used in hospital environments:
Personal Dosimeters
Personal dosimeters are worn by individually exposed workers — radiographers, radiologists, medical physicists, nuclear medicine nurses and radiotherapy technologists. They measure the personal dose equivalent (Hp(10) or Hp(0.07)) and complement or replace conventional TLD or OSL dosimeters. The Thermo Fisher EPD TruDose is a precision electronic personal dosimeter with programmable dose and dose-rate alarms, digital display and data logging.
Area Dosimeters
Area monitors are deployed in fixed or portable setups to survey classified work zones — CT rooms, fluoroscopy suites, nuclear medicine wards and radiotherapy bunkers. The Thermo Scientific RadEye B20 and B20-ER series is one of the most widely used instruments in this domain.
Contamination Monitors
In nuclear medicine and radionuclide therapy, surface contamination detection (alpha, beta) on benches, equipment and circulation areas is critical. The RadEye AB100 offers simultaneous alpha and beta particle detection with high geometric efficiency.
Thermo Scientific RadEye B20 — Beta and Gamma Area Radiation Detector
The RadEye B20 and B20-ER is a versatile portable instrument for contamination and dose-rate monitoring of beta, gamma and X radiation. With a large 20 cm² detector window, it is especially suited for surface measurements in nuclear medicine laboratories, isotope handling facilities and radiopharmacy preparation areas.
Hospital Applications — Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy
Radiation dosimeters are used across virtually every hospital specialty that involves ionising radiation, including diagnostic radiology and CT, nuclear medicine services handling 99mTc, 18F and 131I, external-beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy departments, and radiation protection audits carried out by qualified experts.
Portuguese Radiation Protection Legislation
In Portugal, the use of ionising radiation is regulated by Decreto-Lei 222/2008 (transposing Directive 96/29/Euratom) and Decreto-Lei 108/2018 (transposing Directive 2013/59/Euratom). Facilities must classify work areas, implement individual and area monitoring programmes, and ensure dosimeters are calibrated by accredited laboratories. RadEye and EPD TruDose instruments comply with IEC 60846 and IEC 61526 standards.
Calibration and Maintenance
Metrological validity requires regular calibration by IPAC-accredited laboratories traceable to the SI. Annual calibration is standard practice for area dosimeters, while personal electronic dosimeters such as the EPD TruDose are typically calibrated annually or biannually in Portuguese hospitals.
