Patient-specific QA for online adaptive radiotherapy
AdaptCHECK™ from Sun Nuclear is a SunCHECK® Platform module for independent dose verification in online adaptive radiotherapy, designed for workflows with Varian Ethos™. It addresses the key question before delivery: does today’s adapted plan meet the department’s accuracy and safety criteria?
Working inside the SunCHECK Patient workflow, AdaptCHECK reduces manual steps, centralises QA review and enables scheduled and adapted plans to be assessed using the patient’s daily anatomical data.
What it adds to adaptive workflows
- Secondary dose verification for adapted and scheduled plans in the same environment.
- Varian Ethos integration, with automatic DICOM transfer to SunCHECK.
- Fast calculations: Sun Nuclear reports typical calculation times of 90 seconds or less for simultaneous evaluation of adapted and scheduled plans, based on testing with a 9-field IMRT plan.
- Patient dashboard, with results consolidated into a single timeline for the reference treatment plan.
- Results sent to ARIA®, supporting clinical documentation and traceability.
Why this matters clinically
Online adaptive radiotherapy increases treatment personalisation, but it also compresses the time available for QA. AdaptCHECK’s value is exactly there: independent verification fast enough to fit the treatment cadence without turning each adaptation into a heavy manual process.
“Adaptive therapy introduces real clinical value—but it also introduces new complexity and risk if QA processes do not keep pace. With AdaptCHECK, we have a practical and scalable way to independently verify adaptive treatments without disrupting clinic flow.”
Michael J. Price, PhD, MS, DABR, FAAPM
Key technical requirements
| Platform | SunCHECK Patient / SunCHECK Platform |
| Clinical workflow | Online adaptive radiotherapy with Varian Ethos |
| Recommended hardware | Server with two 10-core Intel Xeon CPUs or equivalent, 128 GB RAM, 200 GB storage and two NVIDIA Datacenter GPUs, according to Sun Nuclear specifications |
| Operating system | Microsoft Windows Server 2019 x64 or Windows Server 2022 |
Checklist before evaluating AdaptCHECK
Before a technical demonstration, it is worth separating clinical validation from IT architecture. AdaptCHECK depends on the adaptive workflow and SunCHECK integration, so the decision should involve medical physics, dosimetry, radiation therapy and hospital IT.
- Clinical workflow: confirm whether the goal is online adapted-plan QA, comparison with the scheduled plan or documentation of the adaptive episode.
- Integration: map Varian Ethos, ARIA, DICOM, SunCHECK Patient and review responsibilities.
- Acceptance criteria: define tolerances, approvals and when an adapted plan should be escalated for review.
- Infrastructure: validate server, GPUs, hospital security, backups and maintenance before finalising the configuration.
