Sun Nuclear (Mirion Technologies) has launched the next generation of silicon detectors for relative dosimetry in radiation therapy: the SunSILICON™ and SunSILICON™ P. These detectors replace the established EDGE Detector™, now at end of life, and represent a significant leap in precision, versatility, and ease of use. Interphysix, the exclusive Sun Nuclear distributor in Portugal, already has both models available.
What changes compared to the EDGE Detector?
The EDGE Detector was the industry reference for small field diode measurements for years. However, its brass housing introduces significant beam perturbations, correction factors exceed 5% for fields smaller than 0.8 cm, and electron dosimetry support is limited.
The SunSILICON detectors introduce three fundamental improvements:
- HE Solid Water™ housing — replaces brass, minimizing beam perturbations and providing more representative measurements of actual tissue conditions
- Extended field size range — SunSILICON measures photon fields from 0.4 cm and electrons up to 40×40 cm; SunSILICON P covers 1.2 cm to 40×40 cm in photons
- Reduced correction factors — below 2% across the full useful range, compared to over 5% with the EDGE for small fields
Sun Nuclear has officially announced the end of life (EOL) of the EDGE Detector, making the SunSILICON detectors the natural replacement for all existing users.
Two models to cover all needs
The SunSILICON family includes two complementary detectors:
The SunSILICON™ (model 1048) is the unshielded detector, ideal for:
- SRS/SBRT commissioning with fields down to 0.4 cm
- Output factors in small fields with minimal corrections
- Electron dosimetry across all field sizes
The SunSILICON™ P (model 1049) is the shielded detector, designed for:
- Full commissioning — profiles and PDDs from 1.2 cm to 40×40 cm
- Periodic commissioning data verification across the full field range
- Measurements for treatment planning system (TPS) validation
Together, the two models cover all relative water dosimetry needs for external beam radiation therapy — small fields, large fields, photons, and electrons.
Clinical and scientific validation
The SunSILICON detectors are not just a commercial promise — they have been extensively validated:
- The study “Characterization of two new unshielded and shielded silicon diode detectors for external beam radiation therapy: SunSILICON and SunSILICON P” (Teresa Anders et al., 2026) independently characterizes linearity, energy and angular dependence, and field factors for both detectors
- The webinar “Beyond the EDGE” with Dr. Andreas Schönfeld presents validation results and the practical transition from the EDGE to the SunSILICON
“These detectors strengthen our portfolio for commissioning electron linear accelerators through superior measurement precision and handling.”
— Gerhard Wessing, Radiologie Vechta
Ecosystem compatibility
Both detectors integrate directly with existing systems: SunSCAN™ 3D, 3D SCANNER™, PC Electrometer™, and SunDOSE™ software. The transition from the EDGE is straightforward — simply replace the detector in the scanning system holder.
